JFK construction and pickup guide

Quick answer: JFK is in the middle of a large rebuild, and the airport itself warns that pick-ups and drop-offs take longer than usual. Terminals 1, 4, 5, 7 and 8 are the ones the airport lists today. New Terminal One is expected to open its first phase in 2027. Your chauffeur waits in a free lot, meets you at the point named on your confirmation, and you should add buffer time on both ends. Questions: (332) 241-7239.

This page collects what the Port Authority and the airport publish about the JFK construction program and turns it into a practical plan for a chauffeured pickup. Every fact below comes from an official source listed at the bottom. Where the sources do not give a number or a date, we say so instead of guessing. For the service itself, see JFK airport car service.

What is changing at JFK

The Port Authority describes the JFK redevelopment as a $19 billion program. About $15 billion is private investment in terminals, and $3.9 billion is Port Authority funding for roadways and infrastructure. It adds two new terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 6, built across five previous terminal sites, and expands and modernizes Terminals 4 and 8. It also includes what the agency calls an entirely new, simplified airport roadway network and a ground transportation center. The agency's own wording is that the airport is at the peak of construction and that travelers should consider public transit.

The airport's advisory page says the same thing from the traveler's side. It lists ongoing 2026 construction impacts and tells motorists and for-hire vehicle users to plan for delays or reroutes because parts of the airport roadway network are detoured or closed. Its transportation page adds that construction is causing delays for every drop-off option, including taxis, ride apps and private cars.

New Terminal One and Terminal 6

New Terminal One

New Terminal One is a $9.5 billion project on the sites of the current Terminal 1 and the former Terminals 2 and 3. At completion it has 23 gates, 22 of them widebody, and about 2.6 million square feet. The Port Authority page states that the first phase, with the new arrivals and departures halls and the first set of 14 new gates, is expected to open in 2027. That is the official timeline. Some travel blogs have reported other dates and phase details, and because those are not primary sources we do not repeat them. Today, the airport still lists the existing Terminal 1 for Air France, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Swiss and Korean Air.

Terminal 6

Terminal 6 is being built by JFK Millennium Partners, a consortium that includes JetBlue as its partner airline. The developer's site describes 10 gates, 9 of them wide-body and 1 narrow-body, with a long departure curb and a physical connection to Terminal 5. The Port Authority lists it as a $4.2 billion, 1.2 million square foot project. The airport's terminal directory does not list Terminal 6 as an operating terminal, and we did not find a current official opening date. Port Authority project pages still carry earlier language about 2026 openings, so treat any T6 date you see as unconfirmed and ask your airline which terminal your flight uses.

Pickup areas, terminal by terminal

The airport does not publish a separate chauffeur zone for each terminal. What it publishes is below, and your written confirmation adds the meeting point for your flight.

TerminalAirlines the airport listsClosest free wait lot for your driver
Terminal 1Air France, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Swiss, Korean AirWait Lot at the Lefferts Boulevard AirTrain station
Terminal 4Delta, Avianca, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates, LATAMWait Lot at the Lefferts Boulevard AirTrain station
Terminal 5JetBlue, Cape Air, Sun CountryCell Phone Lot (East)
Terminal 7Frontier, Aer Lingus, All Nippon, Air Canada, NorseCell Phone Lot (East)
Terminal 8American, British Airways, Alaska, Qatar, IberiaCell Phone Lot (East)

Airline assignments change, so confirm the terminal on your ticket or airline app. The airport says the Wait Lot is closest to Terminals 1 and 4 and recommends the Cell Phone Lot for Terminals 5, 7 and 8. The Wait Lot is a free on-airport lot reached from the Van Wyck Expressway or Belt Parkway, and drivers must stay in the vehicle. It connects to all terminals by a free AirTrain ride of about eight minutes. The Cell Phone Lot is less than five minutes from all terminals and sits near the JFK Expressway. Separately, the airport notes that ride-app pick-up locations for Terminals 5 and 7 are temporarily relocated to the Howard Beach AirTrain station because of construction. That applies to ride apps, not to a reserved chauffeur.

How to meet your driver

  1. Land, clear customs if you are arriving internationally, and collect your bags.
  2. Message or call the number on your confirmation. Dispatch already has your flight and tells the driver to leave the waiting lot.
  3. Walk to the meeting point written on your confirmation. If you are unsure, the Port Authority Information Center in the arrivals area of each terminal has uniformed staff who can point you to the ground transportation area.
  4. Check the vehicle and driver details against your confirmation before you load bags.

The airport warns travelers not to accept rides from unsolicited drivers and to use only authorized taxis, car services, rideshare pick-up areas, hotel shuttles or airport transportation staff. A prearranged ride is one you booked in advance, with a driver and vehicle you can match to your confirmation. The airport does not allow parking at the terminal curb, so your driver will not sit at the door. That is why the phone call matters.

Buffer times that work

Neither the airport nor this site can promise a number of minutes through the construction zone. What we can do is give you a method.

  • Add buffer after landing. The airport says pick-ups may take longer than usual, so do not schedule a tight meeting for the moment your wheels touch down. International arrivals also need customs and baggage time.
  • Add buffer before departure. If you are leaving from JFK, tell dispatch the airline and terminal and set the pickup earlier than you would on a quiet day. The airport also says to expect delays at every drop-off option.
  • Give dispatch the real deadline. If someone is waiting in Manhattan or a meeting starts at a fixed time, put that on the reservation so the airport leg is planned backward from it.
  • Consider the AirTrain if you are flexible. The airport recommends public transit during construction. The AirTrain page lists terminal-to-terminal rides as free and under 10 minutes, and a $8.75 fare at Jamaica and Howard Beach. It also lists overnight full-service disruptions on all lines from 10/5 to 10/15, 10:00 pm to 6:00 am, with free replacement shuttle buses. Check the live page before you rely on it.

Rates and booking

Hourly chauffeur hire is $120 per hour for a sedan and $150 for an SUV, both including gratuity and fees. S-Class is from $175 per hour and Sprinter is from $200; the booking form confirms the final price for those two, which can vary with taxes, tolls and availability. All hourly bookings have a 3-hour minimum. Direct transfers are quoted by route, with point-to-point floors of $130 for a sedan and $160 for an SUV. Construction does not change the published rate, but clock time counts, so a slow airport leg uses some of your booked window. For the main service page, see JFK airport car service, and for a Manhattan transfer see JFK to Manhattan car service. All airports we cover are on the airports page.

Frequently asked questions

When does New Terminal One open at JFK?

The Port Authority redevelopment page for New Terminal One says the first phase, including the new arrivals and departures halls and the first set of 14 new gates, is expected to open in 2027. It lists 23 gates at completion. We do not publish a month because the official page does not give one.

Is Terminal 6 open?

The airport terminal directory we checked lists Terminals 1, 4, 5, 7 and 8 and does not list Terminal 6. The developer, JFK Millennium Partners, describes Terminal 6 as a 10-gate terminal integrated with Terminal 5. We did not find a current official opening date, so we do not state one. Check your airline before you travel.

Where does my chauffeur meet me at JFK?

The airport tells travelers who have already booked a ride to go to the ground transportation area to find their driver, and it staffs a Port Authority Information Center in the arrivals area of each terminal. Your written confirmation names the exact meeting point for your terminal, and dispatch messages you on the day if construction moves it.

Can the chauffeur wait at the curb?

No vehicle may park in front of or next to the terminals. Curbsides are for active pick-ups and drop-offs only, and unattended vehicles are towed. Drivers waiting for you use the free Wait Lot or the free Cell Phone Lot, then come to the meeting point when you are ready.

How much extra time should I allow for JFK construction?

The airport says pick-ups and drop-offs may take longer than usual because of construction, and its advisory page says to plan for delays or reroutes. It does not publish a number of minutes, so neither do we. Give dispatch the time someone is actually waiting at your destination and we plan the airport leg around it.

Does construction change the price?

Hourly rates are the published rates: $120 per hour for a sedan and $150 for an SUV, both including gratuity and fees, with S-Class from $175 and Sprinter from $200. Every class has a 3-hour minimum, and the booking form confirms the final price for S-Class and Sprinter, which can vary with taxes, tolls and availability. Direct transfers are quoted by route.

What should I put on the reservation for a JFK pickup?

The airline, flight number, terminal if you know it, passenger count, bags, drop-off address and a mobile number that works after landing. Say whether you want an inside greeting or a curbside meeting. Dispatch tracks the flight and confirms the meeting point in writing.
